What is prototype CNC machining?

Prototype CNC machining is the process of producing one or a small number of parts directly from a CAD file, used to test fit, function, or design before committing to full production. Unlike production runs, prototype machining is optimized for speed and flexibility rather than volume.

How long does a prototype typically take?

Most prototype orders at Promet are completed in 5 to 10 business days from design approval, depending on part complexity and material. Rush turnaround is available — call us directly for expedited scheduling.

Is there a minimum order quantity for prototypes?

No. We machine single parts as readily as production runs. There's no MOQ for prototype work.

What materials can you use for a prototype?

We machine prototypes in aluminum (6061, 7075, 2024), stainless steel (303, 304, 316), steel (1018, 4140, A36), titanium (Grade 2, Grade 5), brass, bronze, and engineering plastics — the same materials we use in full production, so your prototype behaves like the real part.

What tolerances can you hold on a prototype part?

The same tolerances as our production work — up to ±0.0005" — so results from prototype testing carry over accurately when you move to production.

Can you help with design for manufacturability (DFM)?

Yes. Every prototype order includes a design review where we flag manufacturability issues and suggest optimizations before machining begins, so you're not surprised by cost or feasibility issues later.

Can you take my prototype straight into production?
